She graduated from the Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School in 1992 with a degree in acting. 

Trivia

She was awarded the New Zealand Arts Foundation's Laureate Award in 2012 for her mentoring of young acting talent. When she was 19, she sang backup vocals for a surprise hit rock & roll song, for which she received vodka as payment. 

Family Life

She was raised by her adoptive parents Sheila and John House in New Zealand. Her descent is both Pakeha and Maori. She has two cousins Miriama and Kiterangi.
