Italian composer, pianist, organist, and conductor known for composing more than 300 film soundtracks and collaborating with directors such as Luchino Visconti, Francesco Rosi, and Vittorio De Sica. His work is known for its fusion of jazz, classical, and lounge music and for its influence on the soundscape of Italian cinema.

Before Fame

He frequently listened to jazz on the radio which inspired him to become a musician. He attended the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini where he studied music. He composed his first film score for The Beach in 1954. 

Trivia

He formed the "013" Big Band which made history in 1944 by becoming the first Italian jazz band to perform on national radio following the fall of Fascism. He won the David di Donatello Award for the movie Swept Away in 1975. His song "Traffic Boom" was featured in The Big Lebowski. 

Family Life

He was born and raised in Turin, Italy. His mother was a pianist and his father was a politician. He was engaged to actress Alida Valli in the 1950s. He later married British actress and dancer Gloria Paul. They had one son named Jason. He died in Rome on July 23rd, 2004.
