Australian professional golfer known for having won the Open Championship five times between 1954 and 1965. He was the only golfer to win the tournament for three consecutive years in the 20th century. His consecutive wins happened in 1954, 1955 and 1956.

He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease four years before his death.

In 1960, he married his wife, Mary Thomson, and they had a son named Andrew Thomson.
