Notable for his Tales of Old Russia, Book of Years, and Clan Wars series of fantasy novels, Morwood is also well known for his screenplays for the animated shows Gargoyles: The Hound of Ulster; Gargoyles: Ill Met by Moonlight; and Batman, the Animated Series: Red Claw Rising.

Before Fame

After earning a degree in English literature from Queen's University Belfast, he worked as a civil servant; briefly trained for (and subsequently abandoned) a career in the Royal Air Force; and began work on his debut novel, which was published in 1982.

In early 2006, his television miniseries Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King aired in the United States on the SyFy Channel.

Family Life

A native of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, he was born Robert Peter Smyth and later adopted his mother's maiden name, Morwood, as his pen name. In 1987, he married fellow science fiction and fantasy writer Diane Duane; the couple ultimately settled in County Wicklow, Ireland.
