Most famous for The Wheels on the Bus (published in 1990) and Rapunzel (1997), this popular illustrator and children's writer received the Caldecott Medal for the latter work. He also illustrated children's books by Emily Jenkins, Jack Prelutsky, E. Nesbit, and other authors.
Before Fame
While a student at Yale University, he took a children's book art class taught by Maurice Sendak. After completing further study at Temple University's Stella Elkins Tyler School of Art, he illustrated his first children's book, Emily Upham's Revenge (by Avi), in 1978.

Family Life
A native of Illinois, he spent his youth in the towns of Evanston, Wilmette, and Winnetka and graduated from New Trier High School.
