He learned steel guitar at an early age, but was invited to play rhythm guitar for Gene Vincent's rockabilly band, coming off their summer hit "Be-Bop-A-Lula."

He was the Blue Caps guitarist on the albums Unchained Melody and Cat Man and wrote his own song, "Pink Thunderbird," for the band.
