About

Baptist deacon and activist who is considered a Jamaican national hero. He was a leader of the 1865 Morant Bay protesters, who marched against poverty, injustice and lack of public confidence in the central authority. After leading the rebellion, he was captured, tried and convicted by the colonial government. He was hanged in the Morant Bay court house.

Trivia

In January 2023, there was debate on TikTok over a purported photograph of him. The same photo had also been used to represent Thomas L Jennings, an African-American inventor and abolitionist who lived in New York City. The debate went viral after a video from a 2020 episode of The Steve Harvey Show about "Moments in Black History" used the photo to illustrate Jennings.
