Seasoned British actor most prominently recognized for his role as Rodney Blackstock on the long-running ITV soap opera Emmerdale, which he has played since 2000. His prodigious resume includes scores of additional television roles, including Detective Chief Inspector Tom Haggerty on Special Branch and Detective Superintendent Steve Hackett on Target. He has also appeared in numerous feature films such as Black Beauty, Carry on England, and The Asylum.
Before Fame
He initially trained at a residential plant Pressed Steel Company plant to become an engineering draughtsman; however, he later attended and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He made his television debut as Harry Carson on several episodes of the series Mary Barton in 1964 and earned his 1st leading role later that same year, as Kenneth Wiley on the drama series Swizzlewick. Although he had already amassed numerous acting credits by the time he was cast as "Cross" on the BAFTA Award-winning crime drama series Callan in 1970, it is largely considered to be the breakout role of his career.
Trivia
In the late 1960s, he vied for the role of James Bond in the blockbuster film franchise. However, at just 28 years old, he was told that he was too young to portray the legendary "007."
Family Life
He was born to an English mother Peggy and a Welsh father. He has 2 younger brothers. In 1959, he married Audrey Giles, with whom he has a son named Simon and a daughter named Claudia. The pair later divorced, and he remarried to Anya Pope in 1996. They welcomed their son Maxim in 1998.
