About
English composer known for his film scores of movies and shows from the 1960s through the 1990s. His popular movies include 1969's Hamlet, 1975's Children of Rage, and 1978's Stevie. He also composed music for The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and its sequels, which ran from 1984 to 1994.
Before Fame
He was educated at Radley College and later at Cambridge University, where he received his doctorate in 1966. He was the assistant director for the assistant conductor of Bill Russo's London Jazz Orchestra. In 1964, he became the music director of the Royal Shakespeare Company's productions of Marat/Sade.
Trivia
In 1982, he won the BAFTA for original music award for his scores on Smiley's People, The Woman in White and I Remember Nelson.
Family Life
He was born in Islington, England. He was married to Caroline Maurice in 1961. They had three children, mathematician Sir Timothy Gowers, writer Rebecca Gowers, and violinist Katharine Gowers.
