Gained worldwide recognition as the King of Norway between 1957 and his death in 1991. He was voted the Norwegian of the Century in a 2005 poll conducted by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation.
Before Fame
He became the heir apparent to the throne in 1905 after his father was elected King of Norway.
Trivia
He was known as Folkekongen, or The People's King, due to his immense popularity with Norwegian citizens. He won a gold medal as a sailor at the 1928 Olympic Games.
Family Life
His parents were King Haakon VII of Norway and Princess Maud. He and his wife Princess Martha had three children, including Harald V of Norway.
Associated With
He became close friends with Franklin D. Roosevelt during WWII while his wife and three kids lived in exile in Washington DC.
