Norwegian poet known for The Bullfinch Rising from the Cherry Tree and other poetry collections. Also a translator, he produced Norwegian versions of the works of such authors as William Butler Yeats, Arthur Rimbaud, and Bertolt Brecht.

He published his first poems in 1946. A little over a decade later, he won the prestigious Kritikerprisen Award for Norwegian literature.
