He was a pastor at the Baptist Church in Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire. Following the Charismatic and the 60's counterculture movements, he turned the church into an intentional community. The community became known as the Jesus Army.
Before Fame
He was conscripted to the Royal British Navy and sent to post in Sydney, Australia. There he was approached by an evangelist, whose words stuck with Stanton until he converted to Christianity later that year.

Since Stanton's death in 2009, the Northamptonshire Police have received over 40 complaints of sexual and physical abuse from members of the Jesus Army.
