Best known for his appearances in the American Wrestling Association between 1970 and 1987 when he was an AWA World Heavyweight Champion on four occasions, he was a Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame inductee in 1996 and a WWE Hall of Fame inductee in 2007. He was also a three time AWA World Tag Team Champion.

Before Fame

He earned a football scholarship to the University of Oklahoma but sustained a knee injury ending his football career. He debuted as a wrestler in 1955.

Family Life

His father Warren Bockwinkel was a professional wrestler as well. His mother was Helen Bockwinkel. He and his first wife Susan Tranchitella had daughters named Johnna and Nikki. He was with his second wife Darlene until he passed away.
