He was 12 years old when he began cooking at his family's restaurant. He left school when he was 16 to pursue his culinary dreams and later attended Enniskillen College of Food.

He was born in Blacklion, County Cavan, Ireland to parents Joe and Vera Maguire. He has twin sons with his wife Amelda who nearly passed away during labor.
