Family Life

One of nearly a dozen children born to Nancy Keene and railroad executive Chiswell Dabney Langhorne, she spent her youth in Danville and Albermarle County, Virginia. Following an early, unhappy marriage to Boston socialite Robert Gould Shaw II, she married Waldorf Astor, with whom she subsequently raised four sons and one daughter (her first child, a son, was born during her marriage to Shaw).
