This nineteenth-century politician and military leader held office as President of Peru from 1882 until 1885. A decade earlier, he had raised an army and carried out an unsuccessful revolt against the administration of Peruvian President Manuel Pardo.

Before Fame

He began his rise to power after his friend, Nicolas de Pierola, seized the Peruvian presidency through an 1879 coup d'etat.

Trivia

In early 1881, he organized an army to defend Peru's capital against a Chilean offensive.

He was born in Cajamarca, Peru to Rosa Pino and Lorenzo Iglesias. His marriage to Maria de Posadas resulted in eleven children.
