He worked as a family bodyguard for the governor of Sinaloa state Leopoldo Sánchez Celis.
Trivia
Together with Rafael Caro Quintero and Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo, he took control of the trafficking routes. He was arrested in 1989 and was sentenced for 40 years in prison for organizing the murder of Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. In 2014, he was transferred to a medium-security facility due to his declining health.

His sister is María Elena Félix Gallardo. He is married to María Elvira Murillo. They have two children, Abril Félix Murillo and Miguel Félix Murillo.

His niece, Sandra Ávila Beltrán is a former member of the Sinaloa Cartel.
