About
An American author of science fiction, sports fiction, and historical fiction, he is known for such novels as The Broken Place, Soldier Boy, and For Love of the Game. His Civil War-themed novel, The Killer Angels, won the 1974 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Before Fame
He served as a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne division just before the Korean War. He later accepted a teaching position at Florida State University.
Trivia
He suffered a heart attack at the age of thirty-six and experienced poor health for the remaining two and a half decades of his life.
Family Life
His son, Jeffrey Shaara, is also a popular historical fiction writer.
