Before Fame
He was a member of the Northwest Region in the Little League World Series in 2004. He played both shortstop for his baseball team and quarterback for his football team in high school. Several Ivy league schools recruited him for football and he received numerous offers to play baseball, electing to go to Oregon State.

In college, his accolades included: Freshman Hitter of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Pac-12 Player of the Year and finalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy.
Family Life
He comes from a family of athletes with his mother being a 3-time gold medal winning Olympic synchronized swimmer and his father playing linebacker at Penn State. His sister played soccer for Azusa Pacific University. In 2021, he got married to Cabernet Burns.
