Before Fame
He attended the University of Minnesota, where he received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He later pursued a PhD at Johns Hopkins University and eventually founded the university's Applied Physics Laboratory.

In 1948, he was named an Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Family Life
He married Winfred Gray Whitman in 1927. He and Whitman had two children: Trygve and Lucy.
