Best known for being a kidnapping victim, along with her daughter. In May of 1980, she and her daughter were exiting a salon when they were accosted by Ming Sen Shiue. Shiue held them at gunpoint and loaded them into the trunk of his car. A 6-year-old boy witnessed the crime, and Shiue murdered him for it. He took Stauffer and her daughter back to his house, where he kept them in a small closet for 53 days. He raped Stauffer repeatedly, filming the assaults. In 2019, Lifetime released a movie about Stauffer's ordeal, entitled Abducted: The Mary Stauffer Story.
Before Fame
Prior to May of 1980, Stauffer had been an English teacher and later a Christian missionary.
Trivia
As it turned out, Shiue had been Stauffer's student 15 years prior. Stauffer was attacked by Shiue during his criminal trial. He snuck a knife in and lunged at her, leaving a wound that needed 62 stitches.

She was born in Duluth, Minnesota. Her daughter's name was Beth.
