Before Fame
She took sewing lessons as a child and then pattern drafting as an adult. She took ceramic classes in high school. She learned upholstery, natural dying, spinning, knitting, weaving, screen printing and photography.
Trivia
When she started sculpting, she worked out of the spare bedroom in her house. She set up a kiln on her porch for bisque firing. She later converted a garage into a studio.

In 2011, she and her husband moved from Portland to the east coast. They have a daughter named Lupe.
