Before Fame

He earned an undergraduate degree in biology from the United States Air Force Academy and went on to receive international relations and national security strategy master's degrees from, respectively, Troy State University and the National War College.

He was involved in combat in Iraq, Bosnia, and Afghanistan and won numerous military honors, including an Air Medal, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

In 2007, while living in central North Carolina, he conducted an Air Force leadership seminar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
