Child prodigy considered by some to be the greatest pianist of his time. He appeared in 1941's The Common Touch as a pianist nicknamed Chopin.

Before Fame

He arrived in London in 1889 after his family fled the Tsarist regime. He debuted at Princes Hall in July 1890.

Trivia

He almost boarded the RMS Lusitania in 1915 upon returning from America, but ultimately did not, avoiding a premature death.

Family Life

His father was pianist Michael Hambourg who had been trained by Anton Rubinstein, and his brothers were cellist Boris Hambourg, violinist Jan Hambourg, and musical organizer Clement Hambourg.

Associated With

His 1891 performance of Bach at the Steinway Hall impressed playwright George Bernard Shaw who thought that he had great potential.
