He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Nevada in 1980. He later went on to earn his J.D. degree from the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 1983.

He is also a lawyer. While serving in the U.S. Army, he became an Army JAG Corps officer and was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.

He is the son of Joy LaRhe (née Longero) and Donald Mark Amodei. He has two daughters named Erin and Ryanne.
