About
A prolific author of poetry and fiction, she is perhaps best known for her more than 1,000-page-long novel, Miss MacIntosh, My Darling (1965). Her other works include Moderate Fable (1944) and Angel in the Forest (1945).
Before Fame
She studied Elizabethan and Jacobean Literature at the University of Chicago. In 1937, she published her first poetry collection, Prismatic Ground.
Trivia
She became active in a Greenwich Village literary circle that included Allan Tate, Richard Wright, and Flannery O'Connor.
Family Life
Her parents separated when she was young, and she was subsequently raised by her grandmother in Indiana. She had an affair with author Allan Tate.
