German-born children's author who is known for co-writing the classic Curious George books with her husband, H.A. Rey. She also illustrated the books. Also a philanthropist, she made major contributions to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Boston Public Library and created the Curious George Foundation to help children and abused animals.

Before Fame

Her best-known character, Curious George, was an outgrowth of one of her earliest works, Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys.

She was born in Hamburg, Germany. She met her husband and Curious George co-author, Hans Augusto Rey, in Brazil, where both were refugees of German Nazism.
