During the 1970s, she studied improvisational comedy at Second City in Chicago. In the 1980s, she began performing stand up in New York.

She made a guest-star appearance in the Pamela Anderson series VIP.  She appeared in films including Goodfellas and the remake of The Blob. In 2008, she published her first book, What Was I Thinking? How Being a Stand Up Did Nothing to Prepare Me to Become a Single Mother.

She has two sons. She was the second youngest of six children. She was raised by her mother and step father.
