She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and worked in New York City during her early adulthood years. After moving to Los Angeles, she appeared in her first film, The Laundry Girl, in 1919.

She ended her screen acting career when "talkies" replaced silent films as the Hollywood norm. Her final cinematic appearance was in the 1930 feature Take the Heir.
Family Life
After her marriage to German actor Josef Swickard ended in divorce, Campbell was tragically and brutally killed by the couple's son.
