Character actor best remembered for his portrayal of underworld gangsters and mobsters in films like Diamonds Are Forever, The Man with the Golden Gun and Marathon Man. He was blacklisted from Hollywood after admitting to being a member of the Communist Party, which lead to him making films in Europe until the blacklist was lifted.
Before Fame
He grew up in The Bronx and frequently acted in school plays. He attended the City College of New York and got his start acting in films in the early 30's.
Trivia
He was friends with real-life crime boss Charles Lucky Luciano, whom he would visit in Italy following the mobster's deportation from the United States.
Family Life
He was married to Fanya Foss from 1942 to 1995 and to Alicia Lawrence from 2002 until his death. He had children named Michael and Toni.
