Before Fame

He was born into a Lithuanian Jewish family on the Lower East Side of New York and grew up speaking Yiddish.

Trivia

He attended Columbia University, from which he graduated with a master's degree. He never received his bachelor's degree because he failed to complete a physical education requirement.

Family Life

He married Celia Thaew in 1939, and his son Paul was born in 1943. Paul Zukofsky grew up to be a violinist and musical conductor.

Associated With

He greatly admired the work of Ezra Pound. Pound appreciated Zukofsky's work, as well, and published one of the younger poet's early poems in the literary journal Exile.
