Prominent American architect whose work included the Yale University Art Gallery. He served as a professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design from 1957 until his passing.

Before Fame

He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his B.A. in 1924, and in 1935, he established his own atelier. He worked at the Yale School of Architecture from 1947 until 1957 as a design critic and professor of architecture.

Trivia

He was awarded the AIA Gold Medal in 1971 and also received the RIBA Gold Medal.

Family Life

He was romantically involved with three women over the course of his lifetime and had a child with each partner: his daughter was by his wife, Esther; his second daughter, Alexandra Tyng, was born to his frequent collaborator, Anne Tyng; and his son was born to Harriet Pattison. His second daughter's birth occurred in Rome to prevent a scandal.
