On November 3, 1984, she was abducted by Long as she rode her bike home from work. She was blindfolded and taken to his home where he assaulted her. After 26 hours he released her and she provided information about him to investigators. He was arrested on November 16, 1984.

Her mother had drug and alcohol abuse issues. At age 14, she moved in with her grandmother. She was a victim of abuse by her grandmother's boyfriend.
