Iconic Filipino film director and LGBT advocate whose film Insiang was the first Philippine film ever screened at the Cannes Film Festival. And he was nominated for a Palme D'or for his film Jaguar at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival.

Before Fame

His first film, Wanted: Perfect Mother, debuted in 1970 and won best screenplay at the Manila Film Festival. He went on to win several more awards, including best director in 1970, 1974, and 1976.

Trivia

He created Concerned Artists of the Philippines in 1983 and led it until 1985. The group was a premier progressive force for artists and cultural workers.

Family Life

His nephew, Q. Allan Brocka, is also an award-winning director and LGBT advocate.

Associated With

President Corazon Aquino named him to the 1986 Constitutional Commission, following his criticism of the previous regime.
