In his early teens, he drafted designs for an automatic automobile transmission. He went on to earn a mechanical engineering degree from Cornell University.

Born to William and Idea Louise Hammond, Laurens Hammond spent his childhood in Evanston, Illinois and, following his father's suicide, in France.
