Remembered for his numerous inventions -- which include the Hammond clock, the Hammond electric organ, and the Novachord synthesizer -- this innovative engineer headed the boat engine department of the Gray Motor Company before founding the Hammond Clock Company.

Before Fame

In his early teens, he drafted designs for an automatic automobile transmission. He went on to earn a mechanical engineering degree from Cornell University.

Trivia

During the World War II years, he invented unique infrared tools to assist the military in guiding bombs to intended targets.

Family Life

Born to William and Idea Louise Hammond, Laurens Hammond spent his childhood in Evanston, Illinois and, following his father's suicide, in France.
