Politican best known for his role as the General Secretary of the Communist Party for the Soviet Union from 1984-1985. He became the head of the Communist Party's propaganda department in 1948. He was the head of the General Department of the Central Committee in 1965.

He served in the Soviet frontier guards on the Soviet-Chinese border from 1930-1933. 

Trivia

He signed documents stating that the the city of Volgograd would be renamed Stalingrad on the 40th Victory Day Parade. He negotiated a trade pact with China during his time as the General Secretary.

His first wife was Faina Vassilyevna Chernenko. He was married to his second wife Anna Dmitrevna Lyubimova from 1944 to 1985. His children's names were Albert, Yelena, Vera, and Vladimir.
