Designer of the Idaho Building at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, which by some estimates, was toured by 18 million visitors. The Idaho Building foreshadowed the Arts and Crafts movement.
Before Fame
He studied painting and illustration at the Art Students League of New York. He helped establish Spokane, Washington, as an architectural city rivaling Seattle and Portland.
Trivia
He collaborated with Karl G. Malmgren; a majority of his work was entered into the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
Family Life
He moved to Washington when he was 26 to work as a banker for his uncle. His great-grandfather was the noted naturalist and politician, Jared Potter Kirtland.
