First Black mayor and first female mayor of Boston, known as a longtime education advocate and non-profit leader, before running for office and becoming the first woman to represent District 7 of Boston. 

Before Fame

She worked to advocate for children's education for over 20 years before running for office. 

Trivia

As Council President, she became acting mayor during the transition after Marty Walsh was chosen by President Joe Biden as his nominee for Secretary of Labor. She will hold the position of acting mayor until January 2022. 

Family Life

Her parents are Clifford B. Janey and Phyllis Janey. She was a single mother at sixteen to her daughter Kimesha.
