Founder of the infamous NXIVM sex trafficking cult that was created in the late 1990's in Albany, New York. He was convicted of federal crimes, including sex trafficking of children, conspiracy, and charges of unforced labor.
Before Fame
Prior to starting the sex cult in 1998, he worked and eventually founded his own multi-level marketing company named Consumers' Buyline Inc. He also owned the National Health Network. However, all of these ventures were unsuccessful.
Trivia
On October 27, 2020, he was sentenced to 120 years in prison.
Family Life
He is the son of James Raniere, a New York City advertising executive, and Vera Oschypko, a ballroom dancing instructor. When he was around eight years old his parents separated.
Associated With
He was arrested and indicted in relation to the NXIVM cult activities along with former actress Allison Mack in 2018.
