Before Fame

She competed for the University of Texas, where she won close to a dozen Big 12 Conference championships and was a seven-time All-American.

Though she finished fourth at the 200-meter butterfly, she said she learned a lot from the experience.

Family Life

Adopted by her parents when she was just a few days old, she took inspiration particularly from her father, who never let being wheelchair-bound stop him.
