She played basketball and threw javelin for the track and field team at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. She discovered rugby while getting her master's degree from Florida State University.
Trivia
She made her debut on the then-unofficial American national women's rugby team in 1986. She played rugby for the Berkeley All Blues starting in 1994 before retiring as a rugby player to focus on coaching in 1998.
