One of the sport's greatest all-rounders, he became the first player to take 400 Test Wickets and score 5,000 Test runs. During his career, he set the all-time records for career Test wickets and career ODI wickets, although both records were eventually broken. He retired from cricket in 1994.

He began playing for his local cricket team, Haryana, in 1975 at age sixteen. He made his Test debut in 1978.
