Librarian and civil rights activist known for her anti-segregationist campaign during integration in Alabama. She died by suicide in 1957 after a prolonged harassment campaign.
Before Fame
She graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in both English literature and political science in 1934. She got a master's degree in English in 1935. She worked as a public school teacher in Montgomery before becoming a reference librarian in 1942 at Montgomery's Carnegie Library. She was later made director of research at the Montgomery Public Library.
Trivia
She was involved in the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat and move to the back of the bus. She wrote a letter to the Montgomery Advertiser after the incident comparing Parks to Mahatma Gandhi.
Family Life
She was the only child of Frank and Lila Bess Olin Morgan.

Her work during the Montgomery bus boycott was praised by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in his book Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story.
