Before Fame

His first gig was with the San Francisco Giants in 1963; afterwards he went on to steal thirty-seven bases during his time with the California Angels.

Trivia

While playing right field for the Chicago Cubs, he was named 1973 Cubs Player of the Year.

Family Life

He once hit a police officer with a nightstick because the officer was arguing with his wife.

Associated With

He became the last Phillies player to wear the uniform with the number 1, which was retired in honor of Richie Ashburn.
