Book publisher who is often considered the Father of Children's Literature. The Newbery Medal, a literary award given to authors for distinguished contributions to American children's literature, is named in honor of his impact and accomplishments.

Before Fame

He became a local printer's apprentice at the age of 16. The printing company was eventually sold, but he gained co-ownership of the business when its new owner passed away. He started out by publishing books for adults. He later expanded his business by including children's books, which he quickly became well-known for. 

Trivia

His first children's book was called A Little Pretty Pocket-Book and included poems and proverbs intended to encourage good behavior in children. 

Family Life

He married wife Jordan Mary in 1739, simultaneously adopting her three children, John, Thomas, and Anna-Maria. Together, they had three more children named Mary, John, and Francis.
