Co-founder and original drummer of the rock group The Doobie Brothers who originally acted as the band's sole drummer. In 1971, they went to a dual-drummer formation and added Michael Hossack to the group. Hossack would be replaced by Keith Knudsen.

He was introduced to fellow Doobie Brother Tom Johnston by Skip Spence of Moby Grape.
Trivia
If his music career did not come to fruition, he dreamed of being a full-time police officer. He graduated from a reserve police academy in 1988 before working for a police department for three years. His death was widely misreported as occurring in 2022.
