Before Fame
After serving in the Royal Marines, he studied German and French at New College, Oxford University. He published his first novel, The Collector, in 1963.
Trivia
He taught for a decade at a London all-female academy called St. Godric's College, and he also taught for a time at a school in Greece.
Family Life
He married Elizabeth Christy in 1954. Following Christy's 1990 death from cancer, he married Sarah Smith.
