Before studying with 20th-century Fox makeup head Ben Nye, Chambers worked as a jewelry designer and built prosthetic arms and legs for soldiers wounded in World War II.

He received the Intelligence Medal of Merit for his key role in securing -- through expert, makeup-based disguises -- the escape of several American hostages from Iran during a 1979 operation known as the "Canadian Caper." Played by John Goodman, he is a character in the Academy Award-winning movie Argo, which tells the story of this unique event.

He grew up in Chicago, Illinois, as the son of Irish-American parents. He later settled in Los Angeles, California, with his wife, Joan.
