About
English paralympic cyclist and former swimmer known for becoming the first male Great British athlete to medal at 7 consecutive Paralympic Games and for setting several cycling records for Paralympic cycling events. He represented Great Britain at numerous Summer Paralympics and has also competed in multiple World Championships. It was announced that he would be a contestant on the twenty-first series of Strictly Come Dancing in August 2023.
Before Fame
He was born with a deformed foot, which was amputated when he was three years old. He started swimming at the age of 10 and made his international debut at the Swimming World Championships in Malta in 1994. He represented Great Britain three times in swimming at the Paralympic Games from 1996 to 2004 and won three gold and two bronze medals. He switched from swimming to cycling in 2006 and began competing at international events in the C4 disability category.
Trivia
Anglia Ruskin University made him an Honorary Doctor in Health Sciences in 2012. A month later he was given an Honorary Master of Science degree from the University of Hertfordshire.
Family Life
He was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England. His father Alan was a fitter-welder and his mother Ann was an accountant. He grew up in Norfolk and has a younger brother named Ashley.
