After rising to prominence as the straight man in the stage comedy acts of fellow English entertainer Sid Field, Desmonde became known for his comedic foil roles in the 1950s and '60s films of Norman Wisdom.

During his late childhood and early teenage years, he toured with his family's music hall entertainment troupe The Four Sadlers. He later acted in a late 1920s theatrical tour of This Year of Grace.

Family Life
His more than three-decade-long marriage to his fellow entertainer and frequent comedy collaborator, Peggy Duncan, resulted in children named Gerald and Jacqueline. Tragically, he committed suicide shortly after Duncan passed away in 1967.
